About Our Mic Mod Kits and Services

Several years ago, when I was researching the best mics for recording studios on a budget (for use in my own studio), I came across MXL. MXL makes some very affordable mics, and many of them offer good results, especially considering their relatively low prices. But many MXL models can be made even better with some very simple electronic and physical modifications ("mods").

Here's how: high-quality capacitors can remove artifacts that lesser caps produce, that you only begin to notice once they're gone--because you thought they were part of the original signal. Transient response can also be improved, and distortion levels reduced. That's what these kits are for. I've spent countless hours researching these mics, sourcing the replacement parts, and documenting the modification process in pain-staking detail, so you don't have to. After performing these mods, you can be confident that your mic isn't what's holding you back from recording your next masterpiece!

MXL and a number of other manufacturers (CAD, Nady, Cascade, Apex, etc.) have released these mics under a number of different model numbers and form factors. But remarkably, all of them share the same, or a remarkably similar circuit. This allows the same mod procedure and parts to be used for many of them. After being pleasantly surprised by the quality of these budget mics with a few simple mods, I began offering the mod kits and services below for other studios and recording enthusiasts looking for the maximum bang for their recording buck.

COMPATIBILITY NOTE: Please note that our mod kits only work on versions of these mics that use through-hole components. Some newer revisions may use surface-mount components, for which our kits will not work. If in doubt, open up your mic to ensure that the circuit uses soldered, through-hole components instead of surface-mount. Note that if your mics were manufactured before 2013, our kits should most likely work for you. For more details about the surface-mount version of the MXL 990, click here. If you are having trouble sourcing an older, through-hole version of one these mics, contact us, and we may be able to help!

I offer these kits for people who were like me--you want to try your hand at an easy, do-it-yourself mic mod, but you're unsure of which specific parts to replace and what to replace them with. And when you do find the parts you need (which can take many hours of research), you end up paying ten times the price of the parts just for shipping and handling! That's where our kits come in--we save you the time and trouble of identifying and sourcing the parts (some of which are out-of-production, and very hard to find), and even provide you with detailed, illustrated instructions that you aren't going to find anywhere else. Compatible microphones can be purchased new or used for very little money, so they make a great, low-risk platform for modification. Our kits work on many of MXL's most popular models, so you may already have a few extras lying around!

Also note that although the circuits in these mics are the same, the stock capacitors may vary from one make/model to the next, and may even vary from one mic to the next for the same make and model! That's why installing one of our kits in both mics may give you more consistent results for stereo recording applications (drum overheads, room mics, acoustic guitars, etc.), since the most critical caps in the preamp section of the audio circuit will now be precisely matched.

I also make it a point to ship these (via First Class Mail in a padded bubble mailer) on the same day that I receive payment, so you will most likely get them much sooner than you would from one of the major electronics suppliers, who often take several days before your order ships (especially on such a small order).

PLEASE NOTE: My mod kits do require some basic tools and soldering skills. If you have little or no experience soldering, you could damage your mics, and this may not be a good first-time project for you. Feel free to ask questions first if you are unsure. I also offer the mod services listed below if you decide that you rather me do the mods for you.

IMPORTANT: I ship only to the Domestic U.S.--no International orders, please.

Apex: 180, 185, 435
Audio 2000: ACM1901
Badaax: CM40, MC001

Peluso: CEMC-6
SE Electronics: SE1, SE1A, SE2A
T.Bone: SC400

This kit includes the parts needed to perform the mod on ONE MIC. If you wish to modify more than one mic, you'll need to order a kit for EACH MIC. Each kit includes the following parts:

  • (1) polystyrene (styroflex) capacitor
  • (2) metal film capacitors
  • PDF download with 13 pages of newly-revised, detailed, illustrated instructions for performing the mod on each of the 3 basic variants of microphones represented above: small, medium, and large-bodied mics.
  • BONUS: Detailed, illustrated instructions for how to perform the popular headbasket mod on the medium and large-bodied mics (included in the PDF instructions)

To perform the mod, you will remove two capacitors from one side of the printed circuit board and replace them with the metal film caps. Then, you will remove the ceramic capsule/gate cap from the opposite side of the circuit board, and replace it with the polystyrene cap. These capacitors are non-polarized, so it doesn't matter which lead you connect to which side.

Most who have performed this mod say it takes about 15 minutes (for the small diameter, pencil-type mics--the larger mics may take a little longer), and makes a significant improvement in the sound.

2001 Microphone Mod Kit

$9.99 with FREE (Domestic U.S.) Shipping!

After numerous requests from our customers, we're now offering our 2001 Mod Kit for the following makes and models:

MXL: 2001, V67, V67G
ADK: A-51
Apex: 420, 430
Audix: CX-111
CAD: C400S
Cascade: M20U
Joe Meek: JM47
Nady: SCM-900 (pre-2002)
T.Bone: SC450

The 2001 is one of MXL's most popular mics, and for good reason: it was one of the first truly affordable large diaphragm condensers to hit the market. The 2001 (and the compatible models listed above) use a copy of the classic Neumann U87 circuit, so it's a proven, time-tested design. By simply upgrading a few of the cheap, stock capactiors, you'll have a mic that can truly live up to its potential!

This kit includes the parts needed to perform the mod on ONE MICROPHONE. If you are modifying multiple mics, you will need to order a SEPARATE KIT FOR EACH MIC. If you ordered one of our earlier MXL 2001/V67G mod kits, you'll notice that this kit includes more parts. That's because this new and improved kit replaces ALL of the stock capacitors in the preamp section of the mic's circuit. Note that we only use high-quality, name brand parts by WIMA, Nichicon, Panasonic, and Xicon in our kits.

The following parts are included in each kit:

  • (2) Polypropylene Capacitors
  • (2) Polarized Electrolytic Capacitors
  • (2) Metal Film Capacitors
  • (1) Polystyrene (also called "styroflex") capacitor
  • PDF download with 9 pages of detailed instructions and color photos explaining how to perform the mod
  • BONUS: detailed instructions (with color photos) explaining the procedure for the popular "headbasket mod" for these mics

Also note that this kit works only on the early, pre-2002 version of the Nady SCM-900, that featured the same circuit and transformer-coupled output as the MXL 2001. Later versions of the SCM-900 use a completely different circuit with a transformer-less output, similar to the MXL 990, 603S, MCA SP-1, and V63M, among others. This later version of the SCM-900 can be modified using our 990 mod kit, which is listed above.

Upon receiving payment, I will mail your mod kit/s along with a slip of paper that contains the download link for the PDF instructions. In my experience, this mod should only take about 20 to 25 minutes per mic, and makes a noticeable improvement to your recorded tracks.

Microphone Mod Services

For those who don't have the tools or experience needed to perform the mod for themselves using one of our mod kits, I offer the following mod services.

To purchase, simply complete the check-out process, specifying the quantity of mics that you would like modified. After I receive your order, I will contact you via e-mail with our shipping address--we don't publish it here to reduce the amount of junk mail we receive. Then, ship your mic/s to us using the shipping method of your choice. We will modify your mic/s within 7 days and ship them back to you via USPS Priority Mail.

Note: We not responsible for any damages to your mics that may occur during shipment. Please pack your mics well in a sturdy box, and wrap each mic separately with bubble wrap and tape. Please DO NOT ship the mic in its original case. This is unnecessary, and simply increases the cost of shipping for both of us. If you choose to ship your mic in its original case, you may be billed an additional return shipping charge before your mic is returned. Use a reputable shipping service (UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.) and purchase insurance (if it's not already included) if you're concerned about loss or damage to your mic/s.

Also note--this is NOT a repair service. Your mics will be tested when we receive them (PRIOR to the mod) to ensure that they are in good working condition. If they are not, they will be returned to you and your money will be refunded, less the cost of return shipping.

All prices include free return shipping.

IMPORTANT: I ship only to the Domestic U.S.--no International orders, please.

Shipping Instructions for Mod Services

If you are shipping a mic to us for a mod service, please do not ship it in its original case. This is unnecessary, and simply increases the cost of shipping for both of us. Instead, wrap the mic generously in several layers of bubble wrap, use some tape to secure the bubble wrap (so the mic doesn't get unwrapped during shipping), and ship your mic/s in a small shipping box. If you are shipping multiple mics, wrap each mic separately in it's own bubble wrap.

If the box is much larger than the mic, add extra bubble wrap or other filler material (e.g., wadded-up paper) to keep it from moving around too much, and prevent it from being damaged in shipment. Please note that it's your responsibility to ship your mic/s safely (and sensibly) to us, and we are not responsible for any damages that may occur during the shipping process. If you choose to use styrofoam packing peanuts or other loose filler material (which we generally don't recommend), please enclose your mic first in a plastic bag before placing it in the box. Otherwise, the capsule of your mic can get downright dirty in the shipping process, as there is often lots of dirt and other grime mixed in with those packing peanuts. Finally, when you ship your mic, please e-mail a tracking number to us so we will know when to expect it.

After receiving payment for a mod service, we will promptly contact you with our shipping address so you will know where to ship your mic (we don't publish it here publicly to reduce the amount of junk mail that we receive). When your mods are complete, we will ship your mics back to you, usually using USPS Priority Mail with tracking and insurance. We will also e-mail you the tracking number so you will know when to expect your mic/s. If you have any more questions about shipping, please feel free to contact us.
